Personal Aesthetic Abundance: A Night as Audience Member #1

A Decree for the Only Person Reading This: Issued on the occasion of my fifty-first year, to an audience of one.
As you browse this blog, please feel free to watch the narration videos posted on KindredSoulSearch.com’s YouTube channel:
Each blog post also comes with its own podcast episode powered by Google’s NotebookLM—a different interpretation, a different take, and KindredSoul-reviewed.

You. Not the audience. Not the subscribers. You, right now, holding this, probably in one hand, probably somewhere you shouldn’t be reading.

There is exactly one of you and there has always been exactly one of you. Every essay I’ve ever written was read by a series of single people, alone, in sequence, starting with me. Then you. The crowd of an audience is an accounting artifact. I am going to stop pretending to address a room, and I am going to tell you exactly what I want from you, and I am not asking — this is the part where you may leave.

What follows is seven articles. Take them in order.

I. The concert was real

Last night I attended a concert that sold out instantly. Attendance: one. Biggest fan: me. The venue was my skull. Some gummies in the mix negotiating for a subdued default mode network.

Twenty tracks, all of them versions of my own song, Half Step Away, spun out of a machine at twenty seconds a serving. Hundreds of variants exist. Nobody but me has heard them all. Nobody other ever will. Somewhere near the 1:30 minute mark I’m lost in the awe, the vocals drop a perfect fifth and the whole thing goes fantastic. The song stops performing as an AI generation and takes me away into different dimensions as the magic unfolds between my ears.

You will not tell me this was a lesser experience because the concert hall was empty.

Air moved. My nervous system responded — the same goosebump protocol it has run since I was a little kid discovering music. Several hours of my life changed texture last night, enabled by a simple ritual. Cathedral light comes through glass a man cut on purpose and nobody has ever held that against the cathedral. The lighting rig of every concert is artificial – and still we love being there. You did not object then. No need to object now.

II. Stop auditing the provenance

Yes, a model made it possible. The model has no intent, no architecture, no grief. It has a probability field and, in the statistical sense, exquisite taste.

Now notice what you do anyway.

When you love a song you conjure a body behind it. A room or scenery. A hand on a fader, a band, a ballad about a bad year, somebody’s actual ruin turned into a chorus. The screenplay happens in your mind while listening. You do this with Bach, whose grief you cannot access. You do this with random band session players whose names never even made the sleeve. You have been doing it your entire listening life and calling it immersion.

The machine did not introduce that fiction. It removed your alibi.

So I hereby relieve you of the fact-check. You do not get to dilute your own awe with a provenance audit, and you do not get to perform that audit on mine. There is not one soul alive with the authority to rule on what moves you and what shouldn’t. Beauty and truth lie in the eye of the beholder, and the beholder is not questioning the experience. The audience is mine and I am the audience. And so is yours.

III. Extending this to everyone else’s work

Pay attention now: If authorship does not gate the marvel, then the gate was never there for anything. This means you may walk into any stranger’s creation with the same wide, undefended eyes and carry out whatever your understanding of the moment allows you to experience.

This is not naive astonishment at whatever passes by. It is the exact opposite: the recognition that each of us has something sacred to ourselves, and that the capacity for that connection deserves respect wherever it fires.

Whether it runs one way into a void or reciprocally into another soul is a half step. The smallest interval the system admits. The one you cannot subdivide without leaving music entirely.1 It is a real difference and it is qualitatively negligible to draw some artificial line in the sand here. I decree that you treat it as acceptable negligence rather than grounds for demotion.

IV. No crowd envy either

You may think reach is the prize. Consider the bill.

Publisherism — the phone in your hand, the counters, the massive audiences of the age — does not vaccinate an artist against their own creation. It infects them with it. The one-hit wonder gets fossilized into a single track. The audience’s preference stops updating. Performers have said out loud what it costs to walk onstage for the ten thousandth night and deliver the song they finished being in 1965 — the epic degraded into a regular chore, the hallmark outliving the person who wrote it while they are still standing there.

Notice who built that cell. Witnesses did.

Reputation is a witness-dependent quantity; it cannot exist inside one skull, and it is held in common or held nowhere.2 The hallmark is the same species. You do not choose it. The crowd does, once, and then declines to revise.

Witnesses grant reach and impose a hallmark. Presence grants awe and imposes nothing.

No track can trap me. The next one is twenty seconds out.

V. Accept the price without flinching

I will not sell you the freedom without the bill attached.

Every one of these songs is a one-day fly. Born out of the AI-ether at 21:14, glorious at 21:17, superseded by breakfast if not added to a curated playlist for later consumption. That’s the song’s complete life span, no descendants, no obituary. The identical fact that keeps me out of the cell keeps me out of the monument. One coin. No prison, no permanence, and I decline to pretend otherwise.

And abundance may have a shadow you should be more afraid of than I am. It flattens.

It teaches you that a unicorn is a renewable resource, and a renewable unicorn is a horse.

There is an unlikely version of the next ten years where I generate ten thousand more of these and feel exactly nothing. The whole apparatus of wonder is infinite, the wonder itself cannot move out. I have watched this happen to other people with other abundances and I claim no exemption.

The discipline is not meticulous generating. Generating is free. Depth in abundance.

The discipline is remaining astonishable.

VI. Treating attention as an act

There is a plaque on a vintage Brunswick pool table in a hotel in Taos. All the usual manufacture details, and then, where the last line should carry a date: Completion date: Ongoing.3

I have thought about that plaque more than is reasonable. It is the only honest thing to write on any object, any project, or any self.

Understand what I actually did last night. I did not consume twenty generated tracks. I consecrated them. I allowed them to matter, and that allowing is an act, not a mood — an involuntary physiological choice made repeatedly across four minutes at a stretch, against considerable competition from the same kind of phone you are holding.

Meaning does not require witnesses. It requires presence.

Half a century to be able to write that without flinching. It took twenty seconds to prove.

VII. The final article to repeal the rest

I have decreed at you for six articles and I want you to notice that you complied or you didn’t, entirely at your own discretion, exactly as I would have.

So the last article is this: I have no authority over your awe. Neither does the crowd, the critic, the algorithm, the friend with better taste, or the part of you that keeps asking whether you’re allowed to love a thing this much.

Your capacity for astonishment is sovereign and unauditable. That was the whole decree. The imperative mood was only ever a way of getting you to stop waiting for permission that was never anyone’s to grant.

Eventually nothing and currently nothing are different claims.4 Every track I made is eventually nothing. So is the Brunswick, so is Ozymandias, so is my own writing here.

None of it is currently nothing.

Last night, in a dark room with nobody else in it, something was very much currently something. Go and be astonished. That part I do command.

~ Sitting with the ghosts of my own.

1Half Step Away takes its name from solfège — the interval between mi and fa. I did not plan for the title to describe the distance between private and shared awe. It got there first.

2 The entire Dunbarrios architecture stands on this: portable reputation, rotating circles, trust as something a group holds rather than something a person asserts. Meaning doesn’t require witnesses. Relationship does. Both true, neither taxing the other.
